Do you want to know Nubia Red Magic 5S?

θήκες κινητών

Red Magic 5G is a very interesting case of gaming smartphone and the company of the same name “hits again” with its updated version, the Red Magic 5S –θήκες κινητών-. Released about six months after the original device, the 5S comes to fix some of its predecessor’s malfunctions, with an emphasis on software. Let’s start from the beginning.

Appearance – Design

In terms of design, Red Magic did not want to change anything important. The Red Magic 5G also had a very careful and with clear gaming design orientations which we also find in the 5S. We are talking about a very large device with dimensions 168.6 x 78 x 9.8 mm and a weight of 220 grams framed by Gorilla Glass, both on the front and on the back.

The screen stands out on the front, with the camera at the top of the thin frame (the latter is perfectly symmetrical). On the left side we find a switch and the gaming port socket, as Red Magic calls it, while on the right we have the buttons for activating and adjusting the volume, as well as two capacitive touch technology (capacitive, so to speak) in the two corners – more for I smell them. On both sides there are air ducts that contribute to the adequate cooling of the device.

On the back of the Red Magic 5S we have the first change in relation to the 5G since although the logo at the bottom has LED lighting, the same does not happen with that of the Red Magic in the center. In fact, for those who want something even more discreet, the device is available in addition to the cyber neon that… stands out in a much more neutral silver.

Nubia Red Magic 5S Screen

The screen is another area in which the Red Magic 5S follows in the footsteps of 5G without disarming in the slightest. At 6.65 inches and 338 ppi with AMOLED panel, it has a resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels (aspect ratio 19.5: 9) offering a sampling rate (touch sampling or if you prefer, the rate at which it reads the user’s commands / movements ) 240 Hz. Of course, the refresh rate reaches up to 144 Hz and is the “barker”, with the user having the option to choose between 60 and 90 Hz.

The last setting is probably the golden section as it combines the smoothest and most impressive user experience with satisfactory autonomy. At 90 and 144 Hz the refresh rate is automatically adjusted with the lowest setting being 60 Hz – in contrast to e.g. with the 10 Hz of the Note 20. The screen performance is satisfactory anyway. It is not one of the brightest we have seen, however we had absolutely no problem using it indoors and outdoors.

Red Magic even fixed one of the main problems of 5G, the fingerprint scanner. The one below the 5S screen is much faster and with much better reading success rates. At the same time, the user is helped by the relevant indication by activating the screen that informs him about the place where he should place his finger. At the same time there is an always on function with the possibility of customization.

Nubia Red Magic 5S Cameras

No difference is observed in the cameras of the Red Magic 5S compared to those of the 5G. The device comes with a three-camera system on the back: main sensor Sony IMX686 resolution 64 MP (f / 1.8, 0.8 μm, PDAF), wide-angle 8 MP (f / 2.0, 120o, 1.12 μm) and macro 2 MP (f / 2.0). The first two lenses even protrude slightly from the rest of the back while the macro is in the same “straight” with the rest of the surface. On the front there is an 8 MP camera, which is what you need for a good quality selfie, with HDR support and Full HD video at 30 fps.

Functions – Performance

In terms of technical features, the Red Magic 5S differs infinitesimally from the 5G as it hides the same eight-core SoC-Snapdragon 865 inside. Available in 8/128 GB, 12/256 GB and 16/256 GB versions in terms of RAM and storage respectively, with the latter being UFS 3.1, offering slightly better data access times than the 5G UFS 3.0. The graphics are edited by the Adreno 650 unit, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.1 and NFC are supported, while at the bottom of the device there is a USB-C port.

The battery remains at 4,500 mAh, with its autonomy not differing from the Red Magic 5G. It comes out comfortably one day and can even reach one and a half, depending of course on the use of the smartphone and of course the refresh rate of the screen. As with 5G, a 55 W charger is supported here but it is not included in the package. If you invest in one, you will see the Red Magic 5S battery run out of zero in about 40 minutes.

Nubia Red Magic 5S Software

Significant changes in Red Magic 5S versus 5G are observed in the software. The device runs Android 10 in conjunction with Red Magic UI 3.0. The “strange” translations are not missing once again, however the simple menus – always in combination with the high rate of screen refresh – offer a perfectly smooth and fast user experience.

The device uses AI technology (neo AI, as it says) in order to learn from the way the user uses it, optimizing its operation over time. It adjusts the cooling and screen refresh rate, depending on what the user is doing and what the game is supporting. The smartphone takes care to “freeze” the apps that run but are not used while during the night it clears the memory and arranges the internal storage.

The Red Magic 5S is a slightly improved version of 5G, not in terms of technical features but software. From the moment that Red Magic preferred this street instead of e.g. An update on 5G could certainly slightly refresh its technical features but at least keep the price stable and here is the key point.
